Using SafeAssign

Creating a SafeAssignment

This guide will walk you through the process of creating an assignment using SafeAssign, a plagiarism detection program which compares student submissions against previously submitted papers and Internet sources.

Note: Students do not have direct access to SafeAssign to check their papers before submitting them.

To create a SafeAssignment:
  1. Access the content area where you want the SafeAssignment to appear.
  2. Hover your mouse cursor over the Assessments button, then choose Assignment on the drop-menu.
  3. Provide a name, point value and instructions for the Assignment, then expand the Submission Details section.

There are three options that are SafeAssign specific: “Check submissions for plagiarism using SafeAssign,” Allow students to view SafeAssign originality report for their attempts,” and “Exclude submissions”. These options are explained below.

    • Check submissions for plagiarism using SafeAssign: Checking this box enables plagiarism checking against SafeAssign’s various databases.
    • Allow students to view SafeAssign originality report for their attempts: This setting determines whether students can view the originality report generated for their submitted paper. By default, this option is not enabled.
    • Exclude Submissions: The “Exclude submission” setting in SafeAssign allows a student’s submission to be checked for plagiarism, but will not save the submission in the SafeAssign database for future referencing. This option is useful for allowing students to submit a draft of their papers. The rough draft submitted by the student will still be compared against the SafeAssign database of prior submissions and internet sources, but it will not be archived in the database for future checks.Because each SafeAssignment allows for only one submission per student, a new SafeAssignment will need to be created for final draft submissions. In order to avoid redundant point values in the grade center, rough drafts should be set to be worth 0 points.
  4. After all the options are correct, press Submit. The next page should display a green confirmation banner.
